If the ATS-V has a Turbo V6... and the Camaro is moving to its platform... then GM has a template for a Turbo V6 midsize 2-door coupe. That means...

Don't even really need to have the Camaro in there to make the logical leap to a coupe.

Yeah, any chevy-branded or buick-branded Turbo RWD coupe (something for Camaro SS prices) would be perfect.

Or at the very least, a turbo V6 Camaro.

Camaro gets V8, Buick gets detuned 3.6TT, ATS-V gets tuned 3.6TT.

This could work. Very, very well.

Called it!

Pretty impressive considering this was before we know that the Camaro was moving over (implying that they could sell the chassis+engine for significantly less than the ATS), and that the CTS's Turbo V6 would fit into the ATS.

De Tuned? Fuck that! Gimme a 500HP TT V6!

Kidding, mostly.

But yeah, Imagine this lineup:

Camaro:

$22000 - N/A V6 LTX (320HP) (18/22 mpg)
$25000 - Turbo I4 LTG (290HP) (21/30 mpg) and 100-200 lbs lighter than the V6
$34,000 - SS V8 LT1 (455HP) (17/29 mpg)

Buick:

Current Regal Lineup
$37,000 - Regal Coupe GS - Turbo I4 LTG (290HP) (21/30 mpg) AWD
$45,000 Regal Coupe GNX - Turbo V6 (455HP) RWD (no mag ride control though to keep costs down)

Basically, you'd have the Regal being a more bare-bones coupe version of the ATS, positioned between it and the Camaro. It would basically be the entry for the Turbo V6, priced right where the Cadillac N/A V6 ATS is now. I imagine the ATS-V isn't going to sell for under $55,000.

The limiting factor here is probably GM fearing that a Buick GS or GNX would cannibalize ATS sales., which they'd make more margin on I bet because of the options. Same with a Camaro I4.

They also may decide that selling an I4 turbo Camaro wouldn't work if their more expensive turbo model couldn't be at least as powerful as the V6, unlike the Mustang whose V6 is less powerful than the Ecoboost. That, and not having a Turbo Camaro heritage like the mustang may not give much confidence to sales.

Still, I want my damn Regal Coupe already.

I haven't been in an ATS to see how the size compares to, say, a Camaro. The Buick variant could fill a hole between the muscle car Camaro and the too expensive luxury sport coupe/sedan ATS. A cheaper ATS, yes, but more importantly a Camaro alternate for someone that maybe wants a little more interior space and refinement.

Buick should get detuned TTV6 so it doesn't compete with the ATS-V...

...with the caveat that Buick engineers stick a random fuse somewhere that if you pull it you get the full 455bhp. Buick lied with the power output of the original GNX so it wouldn't challenge the Corvette on paper. They should do the same here...

The Turbo V6 is likely more powerful for the money than the LT1.

V6 heavier and costs gm more than the lt1 to produce, but a v8 is always priced higher unfotunately. They know donestic/ camaro guys to require v8 and euro/japanese/bmw guys require dohc. And both have their cake with the alpha platform.

Where do you get that the V6TT costs more than the LT1? The LT1 is likely lighter, but I'm not sure it's cheaper.

component count of precision items like 3 extra cams, valvetrain, 2 turbos, intercooler, wastegates, etc. Bean counters agree the big dumb American v8 is pretty smart fiscally.
